High School Sweethearts Ready for College

Relationships in Animo Pat Brown can be seen as years go by. In the hallways there are a few couples who hang out during lunch and spend most of their time together when they aren’t in class.

Studies have showed that only about 50 percent of high school relationships have a chance of succeeding and that from those only a few actually last.

48 percent of those who marry before 18 are most likely to divorce within 10 years, compared with 24% of those who marry after age 25. The study on marriage and age was published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2001, from 1995 data.

Some of these couples who’s future seems clear and may be serious about their relationship expect to see their futures linked together after graduation.

Seniors Vanessa Guzman and Jose Lopez have been together for about a year and already have some plans. “We are planning to go to a university and move in together even if we don’t go to the same one.”

They have very positive outlooks on their futures even when things might not go as they planned.

“If we don’t get to move in together due to money, we will still spend time together during our free time and we will find a way to make things work.”

They say that they have talked about their plans and have also discussed it with both their parents.

Seniors Gloria Zarate and Dennis Godinez have been together for two years and four months. They have also talked about their futures. “We agreed to keep in touch and look towards our future.”

They also mentioned that their paths aren’t that far fetched. “We are planning to stay close and not looking forward to going far.”

After graduation, Gloria plans to study for a position as an OB-GYN, while Dennis wants to become a firefighter or a lawyer. They say their career choices might not cross paths because of the different courses and major selection, but that they hope to attend the same college.

Unlike Vanessa and Jose who are very positive about their futures, Gloria and Dennis are more lenient and optimistic about their choices.

“Our only concern is the fact that we might not get accepted to the same college,” Gloria said, “but whatever choice we take we will always support each other.”

Both couples agree that the decisions they made in including their partners for their future doesn’t hold them back from a wider range of choices for college and career paths.

“We want the best for each other and if one of us has an opportunity of a lifetime then we will take it,” Vanessa said. “We both give each other freedom because we both know there will be time when we can spend time with each other.”
