Lower the Legal Age of Drinking Alcohol to 18

Lower the Legal Age of Drinking Alcohol to 18

By Leonides Martinez and Cassie Rodas

Throughout centuries the age of 18 has been a symbol of becoming an adult and being grown enough to make the right choices. At the early age of 18 we hold a lot of responsibilities such as: voting, serving in the military and a sense of becoming independent. For decades there has been debates of whether the legal age of drinking is justified as being 21 or if it should be lowered down.

Further, many students tend to drink at a young age, breaking the law of no drinking under the age 21. The legal age for drinking should be changed to the age 18.

Throughout the years drinking age has been changed. However, teen drinking keeps rising as time goes by. According to the law when you reach the age of 18 you are considered an adult in the court of law and your parents do not have much say over you. Assuming by the age of 18 you are mature enough to know what kind of choices and decisions you decide to take such as consuming alcohol.

Furthermore the age of 21 being illegal to drink as been an issue since our current prohibition is not being effectively in prohibiting teens from drinking. Most teens break the drinking age law on a daily basis throughout the world. It doesn’t make any sense for the people to consider this as disobeying the law or to restrict them until the age of 21. Parents even allow their children to drink at that age and sometimes even younger. Of course, hearing that a parent allows their child to drink does not sound like a good thing but there are some that actually take special precaution with this situation. For example, some parents only allow their child to have a taste of the driIMG_2175nk or they may only allow them to drink as along as they are with them or a very trusted family member.

Additionally, if the age of drinking alcohol is lower to the age of 18 it would benefit the government in part. Since the teen rate of drinking alcohol is essentially high that means that most of the teens that drink alcohol would buy alcohol from bars, restaurants and other places that have licensed establishments. In other terms the tax revenue of these places would increase. Tax revenue is the income that is gained through government taxation. It would be significant to lower the age because it would help the economy.

Drinking age should be lower down to the age of 18 because people should be considered as mature enough to make their own life decisions. Additionally, parents allow their children to drink alcohol at the age of 18. In terms of money, this will even be beneficial to the government tax revenue. People become responsible by experiencing responsible tasks. Teenagers will manage to have an early opportunity to responsibility and become even more mature throughout the years.Drinking has been around for many centuries and will probably never be stopped. It will not stop teenagers from consuming this substance so it is best to end these so called crimes being committed by young adults.
