Politics in Amino Pat Brown Charter High School

Los Angeles is home to a diverse population. Whites, Asians, Blacks, Latinos, and multitude of  other ethnicites all reside in the Los Angeles County. California, for a while has been politically  left winged on the political spectrum. It is a haven for minorities and immigrants. However, not all people in California agree with each other either on economic issues or social issues. Today, many schools encourage students to be democratic, but not all students agree with the ideology that schools are pushing for. They push students to think and believe one way. Many teachers in California are overwhelm liberal and try to teach a biased curriculum. Same goes for right wing teachers in republican states like Texas or Alabama.

Animo Pat Brown Charter High school is full of Latinos and has few black students. Students here seem to be more liberal, but there is a small minority in the school that have a different political view. Since there are so many left leaning students and staff in APB, the vocal minority are washed out and try to assimilate with the rest, only stating what they believe to close friends or in debates. However, talking about politics is  taboo in school. Students and most staff would feel uncomfortable talking about politics.

Some students have reached out and decided to explain their perspective on politics. A student, whose identity will not be revealed said; “ I am not a conservative, but I agree with some Republicans on some social issues.” This student believes that people should be more independent and not count on the government to bail them out. The same student later mentions, “ I feel like the far left are too radical and shuts out the free speech of everyone that disagrees with them.” It seems that students that feel oppressed by the social justice warriors from the left are more likely to appeal to right winged idols like Ben Shapiro and Jordan Peterson.

American politics has always been like a sport. It is tribalism. Both sides make little effort to come to an understanding. It is about what can one do for their side and what can one do to screw over the other side. Having civil conversations is key to getting to know the other side’s views and beliefs. Nowadays people just shut each other up, infringing each others’  right to speak freely. It is rare and taboo, to defend the other side’s right to speak, and if you do you are ridiculed for showing civility. Overall, believe in what you think is right, defend your beliefs, and protect other people’s beliefs. People should listen and be understanding of one another, that is what makes a democracy function. A person with a difference of opinion should not be afraid to say what to believe.
