How Common Are Your Instagram Habits?

How Common Are Your Instagram Habits?

By: Porscha Outlaw

Now that school is over, Anndrea is able to relax on her couch and scroll through her phone. On Instagram, she sees a funny meme and sends it to her friends as she chuckled loudly. Eventually, she comes across a picture of her crush and decides to look at some of his most recent posts. She soon sees a picture of him and some girl together and makes a noise of discontent in the back of her throat.

Once again, she sends the picture to her friends, saying, “why she look like that.” She continues scrolling as she waits for a reply, which took minutes for Erika to respond saying, “why her wrist look broke.” Sending a quick “Lol” back, Anndrea continues her journey on Instagram.

After what feels like minutes, Anndrea looks at the time and sees its already 5:38 PM, she had been scrolling since a few minutes after 4 o’clock and was now looking at makeup tutorials.

But Anndrea is not the only one, most of youth now spend countless amount of time on Instagram and other social media platforms. Considering this, how common is it that students at APB exhibit the same habits on social media.

Here at APB, students spend anywhere between thirty minutes to three hours on social media, and most commonly tend to look at celebrity pictures and funny videos or memes.

Junior Melanie Alarcon said she spends about three hours on her phone at home and about half of that is on social media. Melanie also said, “Stalking people on Instagram is pretty much the only thing I do. But it’s mostly just celebrities to see what they are up to and they’re really pretty. And whenever I find something really good, I send it to my friends because we all like the same things.”

However, sophomore Brian Martinez said he spends anywhere from four to five hours  on his phone, majority of which is on Instagram. But instead of looking only at celebrities, he keeps up with people he knows personally. He said, “I mostly look at post related to music, but I keep it to myself.”

Even more so, Junior Jacqueline Silva said she enjoys just looking at the things people post, but never shares what she finds with anyone.

Similar to Brian and Melanie, senior Yanet Cortez said of the usually three hours she spends on her phone, she is on Instagram from thirty to forty minutes mostly looking at celebrities. But unlike Brian, she confides in someone who has the same interests as her, mostly just her friends.

For the most part, it seems that students generally spend over one hour on Instagram, and usually look at posts of Celebrities or memes they find. Many students, when asked said they send a lot of what they find to their friends. All in all, it seems that there is a variety of actions that students take when on social media, but some do tend to be much like each other.
