There have been 3 main fires in california there names are the Bridge Fire, Airport Fire, and Line Fire. The Bridge Fire that is close to Gillian Gamboa, a teacher at Animo Pat Brown started Sunday, Sept. 8 in the San Gabriel Canyon.
In the Bridge fire 51,000 acres were lost just by friday and in that time only 3% of the fire was contained.
According to Gillian Gamboa, a High school math teacher that lives near the bridge fire says , “But for probably a week after it started, there was a lot of it it was really dark, and ash was falling from the sky all the time, and it smelled like burning.”
Gamboa’s family’s life is affected by the bridge fire, for example her daughter who has asthma.
When asked about how were family was dealing with the fire she stated, “ She has to actually stay inside with air filters, because she if she goes outside, she starts coughing, and she has to wear masks or go straight from the house to the car.”
It has made it just very difficult for her daughter to be there in the situation and be in good health.
The bridge fire has affected the people within the neighborhoods but also the wildlife that lives within the forest that has burned over 50,000 acres of wildlife homes.
According to Gamboa she said “So that I know that for me, is really sad about that part, and also really sad because it destroys all the homes for the bears.”
“ The deer, we have a lot of big deer, mountain deer, and they have to come down like bobcats have been coming down the mountains, and so when they come into the neighborhoods, then they tend to get killed by cars and, you know, or people take them and stuff like that.”
According to news reports the fire started by a man smoking a cigarette. When asked about the matter GIlian had to say –
“they threw in it started the fire, which is really sad because there’s an area that’s right near where it started, which is a beautiful waterfall and like a place where you can camp and little cabins and all that got destroyed.”
It was sad to see how one man could start a fire so strong and damaging to not just to those who live right next to it but to California as a whole.
Gillian satiated, “There’s, it’s against the law to do that in the mountains, but there isn’t enough money to hire enough forest rangers to be able to keep, you know, to watch it all.”
These fires are still happening with all these laws and rules in place and yet people sadly disobey and cause fires.
“ So I think that students should be aware that even though you live in, in LA, that there’s just this amazing wildlife right there, like, an hour or less from your house.” – Gillian Gamboa
