AJ Brown was traded to the New England Patriots on the 1st of June after a long year of drama and brewing tensions with the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles received a first round pick in 2027 and a fifth round pick in 2028 in the draft in exchange for the wide receiver.
The season after the Eagles won the super bowl, which is also the season that just passed, they had a new offensive coordinator who was the former quarterback coach for them, Kevin Patullo. They needed new personnel in that area of their coaching staff because Kellen Moore had just left to the New Orleans Saints to become their head coach as he wanted to take on a bigger role.
This meant that Kevin Patullo was familiar with the players on the team and should have been able to be somewhat successful on the team. Throughout the season, he proved that he was not up for the job on multiple occasions as at the end of the season he was fired by head coach Nick Sirianni.
Nick Sirianni took a lot of the blame for the play calling on offense and there was a lot of drama between Jalen Hurts, Patullo, Sirianni, and AJ Brown. AJ Brown became very frustrated with his role as it wasn’t as significant as it had been in previous seasons, especially with Patullo giving a larger role to running-back Saquon Barkley.
One of the moments that showed the tension between the coaching staff and Brown was the playoff game against the San Francisco 49ers. AJ Brown exchanged some words with coach Sirianni after he had dropped a pass that was targeted to him and Sirianni was frustrated because Brown took too long to get off the field.
Another instance where the coaching staff was a difference in a game was a game versus the Los Angeles Rams. Jalen Hurts had to call his own audibles multiple times causing him to change the play due to him not having the confidence in the plays that Sirianni and Patullo would give him.
AJ Brown was also bashed for his performance in the Sofi Stadium versus the Los Angeles Chargers. Brown caught six passes that game but also dropped three critical passes that could have won them the game. Hurts also had a disaster class with 5 turnovers in the game but AJ Brown being a big part as his missed catches could’ve been game changing for the Eagles.
Eagles fans are notorious for giving a lot of criticism to everyone and being some of the biggest haters. So with Brown dropping passes and Patullo’s play calling, they were bound to receive some words from them.
Patullo was eventually relieved from his duties as the offensive coordinator by coach Sirianni and AJ was traded in early June to the Patriots. AJ later revealed to the world that not only was he happy to be traded, but he was also a big, BIG patriots fan the whole time and this just added to the fire as Saquon Barkley spoke out on this and talked about how most players lose the love for their favorite team after being in the NFL but not AJ Brown.
