Writer’s Block in Journalism

Writers+Block+in+Journalism

As a journalist it can be very frustrating when you have no idea what to write about. I tend to stress out and look at every story possible and see if anything interests me. Sometimes I find something and sometimes nothing peaks my interest. Not everyone is like me though. Other journalists are fine with writing stories that don’t interest them and they come out fine. I on the other hand, cannot write a good story if it’s not something I find interesting. This got me thinking… What do other people do when they have writer’s block?

I went around my Journalism class to see what they did to deal with their writer’s block and there were some similarities and some differences:

APB seniors Miguel, Jazmin, Leonides, and Marielis all said that they like researching online or reading other people’s stories. They believe seeing other people’s writing helps them get ideas for their own.
APB senior Joanna and junior Carlos said that they like listening to music. They believe it puts them in a better state of mind to begin their writing.

These ideas were pretty predictable. They’re some of the most common techniques people use to get over their writer’s block. But then there were a couple other interesting ones that I have never heard of before. For example, APB senior Cindy said that she likes looking at works of art because she feels like looking at something helps her some up with what to write. Senior Kayla says she likes going through social media to giver her some ideas. One interesting technique came from APB Junior Alexis. She said she likes changing the font of her lines because it sort of helps her start over.

Then there was one student who I know shares the same solution to writer’s block like many others. APB Senior Monica said she does absolutely nothing.

It seems our whole Journalism class has very different approaches when it comes to dealing with writer’s. Whatever technique we use is fine because we all get the job done. Well… at least most of us do.
