Dual enrollment is a valuable opportunity that allows high school students to take college courses while still completing their high school education. At Animo pat brown, Students in grades 10-12 have the option to enroll in college classes through East Los Angeles College (ELAC), either as an elective during the school day or independently online or in person. Dual enrollment is especially beneficial for students who already have an idea of their future career path, as it gives them a head start on their education.
One major benefit of dual enrollment is the flexibility it offers. Students can take courses online, on a college campus, or at school as an elective. This allows students to choose what works best for their schedule and learning style. For students who prefer structure, taking a college course during the school day can be helpful. Others may prefer online or in-person college classes outside of school for more independence and course variety.
At APB, Dual Enrollment classes are offered during school hours. This makes the classes even more accessible for students as they don’t need to travel outside of class. Next year, these classes will be offered during students 2nd and 5th period, according to Junior class counselor Ms. Ibarra.
Dual enrollment is beneficial as it serves as an opportunity to take classes related to future career goals and help students explore future careers.. By enrolling in college level courses early, students can explore different fields and gain experience before graduating high school. These classes also provide college credits, which can be used toward future education. For example, a student taking AP Spanish would no longer need to take Spanish in college since they’ve already met the requirement. Marisol Rodriguez, a Junior at APB, shared her experience after being asked about taking a college class, saying it has been “something new that has taught me new skills while also giving me useful credits toward my education moving forward.”
Dual enrollment is also financially supportive for students. When taken as an elective at Animo Pat Brown, the school provides the necessary course materials. Even students who take college classes on their own time can ask office staff or counselors for help obtaining materials. For example, textbooks, lab manuals and other necessities can be very expensive costing more than some students may be able to afford. This support makes college courses more accessible and removes financial barriers that might prevent students from participating.
Overall, dual enrollment provides strong opportunities for students who are thinking ahead about their future. By offering flexible learning options, career-focused courses, and academic support, dual enrollment helps students gain experience, earn college credit, and prepare for life after high school. Students who have a clear idea of their goals should consider taking advantage of this opportunity.
