    Why Uniform?

    Why Uniform?

School uniform is strictly enforced in Animo Pat Brown, but is it necessary? School administrators argue that school uniform makes the school look more professional and it demonstrates unity. They do not want to create a social economic division and different groups among students. The main objective for public school administrators is to avoid tension and violence over what students “represent” when it comes to gangs.

However, many students complain about how they do not own some clothes in some of the colors required by the school. The only sweaters permitted can be fully black or college sweaters and not all students own black sweaters or college sweaters. Sometimes the problem is not the sweaters, it’s the logos. For example, some black sweaters sometimes have logos such as the nike logo, Aeropostale logo, Hollister logo and Adidas logo. Why are these sweaters not allowed if they will not cause any tension between the students? Why are these sweaters prohibited if they are black? I mean it isn’t like brutality will become an issue over which sweater brand is more favored. Plus, the colors chosen to represent our school don’t correspond to the colors required as part of school uniform. In case students did not know, the school colors are navy blue and grey but our uniform colors are khaki and black. If the colors are the issue, then the school should allow grey, black, and white sweaters to be worn. It is allowed for shoes, why shouldn’t it be allowed for sweaters? Changes need to be made as soon as possible. If the school decides to keep uniform, then at least the colors of the sweaters should be changed to white, grey and black sweaters instead of just black sweaters.

School uniform prevents students from expressing themselves freely. We understand that gang affiliations and violence needs to be avoided, but it gets rid of the students’ individuality. As teens get older, they feel the need to feel like they have a voice and express it through what they wear. Strict school uniform makes students feel as if there is a restriction to individual preferences. Also, If adolescents don’t have the ability to choose what they wear, they will also begin to lack in creativity. It will prevent them from being articulate in their future experiences. Therefore, school uniforms should not be strictly enforced or enforced at all.
