Professors Are Predominately Liberal

Critics denounce that universities are not diverse in politics like the rest of the country and they urge reform of hiring practices to correct for political disparity.

Liberals predominate on faculties. A fifth of all American adults described themselves as liberal. About half of the faculty did. Even among professors who considered themselves moderate, liberal political opinion were common especially on social issues like gender equality and gay rights. Only 14% of the professors identified as Republican.  Overall, universities are not filled with radicals but there is a great amount of liberals.

Some have come up with solutions such as  hiring more conservative professor through some form of affirmative action.Colleges should expose students to different array of ideas not just their ideas because then students will be lead to believe the same thing. Every student should think how they want and not be forced to think in any other way. Even though most professors are liberal, the average student is not forced to think like a liberal.3533072611_fe4c72121f

It is less common for professors who teach on highly technical subject, to talk about politics in the classroom. Those professors who teach in the social and humanities, try to sway away from their political views as they teach. The majority of the professors focus more on teaching the subject as well as analytical reading writing and critical thinking.

Liberal professors are bigoted of those who disagree with them and discriminate against conservative scholars. However, there are few conservative scholars to discriminate against. The reason for this is because graduate students mirror the politics of the professors. Liberals greatly exceed the conservative graduate student ranks. This means that more graduate students apply for most academic jobs. Therefore, there are many liberal professors.

Conservatives, perhaps, do not go to graduate school because they are intimidated by liberals. They do not feel like their ideas match up with most of the professors and they feel uncomfortable.

The United States should hire professors who regardless of their political stance, will be excellent leaders in their fields and instructors. In addition, professors should not make their political and social views known to students.
