After Election Day, many of us were disappointed to hear that Donald J. Trump was announced to become our 45th president in January of the upcoming year. Many Latinos were scared that they were going to be deported and sent back to their home countries. The day after the election, many students were devastated and teachers were comforting them by telling the students that everything is going to be okay, but was it really?
Almost a week after the bad news was given that Donald Trump was to become president, students decided to participate in a walk out during school hours. On November 14, 2016 some students from APB decided to walk out and go protest along with other high schools in the community. During this walk out many staff members were concerned for the safety of the students, so they were following them while they were out protesting.
While some students did walk out and went to protest some students managed to stay in school and continue to get there education. A fellow student at our school – which will remain anonymous – said, “Some people just wanted to get out of school and go home, they didn’t even have a purpose on why they had done the protesting”. But on the other hand another student claimed that some did it for a reason and had a huge purpose to it. Eleventh grade student, Josue Olivares said, “I walked out because I wanted my voice to be heard and not be seen as a minority”.
As some students stayed in school, many walked out in order to have a voice for themselves along with their community and parents. Many students aren’t prepared for what the future might hold for their parents and communities. Some have hope for the future while others just hope nothing bad happens.
